Who are We.....? Anthony.

Name: Anthony Evans

Reason for doing the challenge
There is probably not a family that isn’t affected by cancer in one way or another. I have family members now battling this awful disease. I have been fortunate in that my mother and cousin are cancer survivors but the effect it has on you is enormous. If by doing this helps in some small way it has to be worth it.

 Biggest challenge
I love my sleep and I can get grumpy without it so a slog up and down 3 challenging peaks with next to no sleep is going to push me to the limit! It’s also going to be tough not to drink too much real ale the night before in Betws Y Coed!

Who are We.....? Stuart.

Name:  Stuart Evans

Reason for doing challenge:   I lost my niece Sophie 12 years ago to cancer when she was 4 years old and though the years have passed, she is never far from our thoughts.  There was about 10 months from knowing something was wrong to the final hours and whilst at first it was not clear what it was, it became all too clear as time went on.

It is something I would not wish on my worst enemy and I hope I never have to experience it again in my lifetime and that cancer and other life threatening diseases are extinguished for good, sooner rather than later.
The help that was provided by the staff of Llandough hospital, Heath hospital and by the children's cancer charity, Latch was invaluable.  Whilst it was a difficult time for all affected, it was heartening knowing there were people who were able to give their time and experience at such a trying time and that there was charity funding available to assist with issues that, at such an emotive time you don't want to have to worry about such as onsite accommodation.  Knowing that any money raised for Tenovus will be put to good use will be the biggest motivation for me and will power my determination to get me up (and hopefully down the mountains) on the day(s).

Biggest challenge I face:  I have been married for 11 years and a desk jockey for about the same length of time and as such, I am not the beanpole I once was.

I am carrying the extra pounds these days, and as I have some mild breathing difficulties as a result of having Sarcoidosis (an auto immune system disease from which I suffer respiratory issues - though I haven't had a flare up in over a year), these make this a personal challenge to not only compete but also to complete the entire 3 peaks challenge.

Who are We.....? Phoebe.

Name: Phoebe Way

Reasons for doing challenge:  I lost my dad to cancer 2 years ago, just shy of 3 months after diagnosis.
I think it’s really important that funds are raised for research to try and reduce the suffering of loved ones, family and friends in any way possible.
The work of nurses is an invaluable support and I would like to give something back.

Greatest challenge I face: Well I’m not really the outdoorsy fitness type so apart from a phobia of heights, being unfit and overweight with only 30% support across my left kneecap I’m sure I’m going to be fine!

Who are We.....? Eleanor.

Name: Eleanor Evans

Reason for doing the challenge: In November 2013 my mum died of cancer 6 weeks after diagnosis and the devastating effect of the disease not just on the loved one you lose but the people left behind has left an indelible mark on me.
It shocks me just how many people are affected by this and I like the others would like to see this eradicated in my lifetime.

Greatest challenge I face: I have no particular fears of walking, heights or the fact that the weather may be atrocious but as someone with a very sweet tooth am not sure how I will survive without chocolate for a 24 hour period!   For those of you who follow the stock market best buy your shares in Kendal mint cake, sales are likely to go up soon!

Who are we.....? James.

In the run up to the big day, I will post a mini biography of each person who will be completing the challenge.

First up,  'El Capitan' James O’Reilly

Name: James O’Reilly

Reason for doing challenge: I lost my mother in law earlier this year to cancer.  The effect on my family has been huge. I want to support the work of Tenovus in the hope that in the future others do not have to suffer from this disease.

Biggest challenge I face:  Apart from being unfit, overweight and shattered from lack of sleep (newborn baby) I do get nervous with heights.

James is the backbone of the challenge and has been intrumental in organising it and ensuring the momentum continues for this great cause. He does all this, his day job and he's just become a father again!

Know your Peaks!

I thought I'd put a bit of information on the peaks we are attempting to climb.

The first one - SNOWDON.

North Wales – Snowdon (1085 metres/3560 feet)

The jewel in Wales’ crown and the highest mountain in the country, Snowdon is the first mountain climbed in the trilogy.

Situated at the southern end of the Snowdonia National Park , the quickest route to the summit and back is via the PYG Track from Pen y Pass.

The descent most commonly used is via the Llanberis path which runs alongside the Snowdon Mountain Railway down into Llanberis.

The second one - CADAIR IDRIS.

Mid Wales – Cadair Idris (893 metres/2930 feet)

“Cadair” is Welsh for chair and “Idris” was a legendary giant who is said to have used the mountain as his armchair to gaze over his domain.

Situated at the southern end of the Snowdonia National Park near to Dolgellau, the mountain is best climbed via the Minffordd Path.

This route starts near the glacial Tal-y-llyn Lake and climbs past Llyn Cau and along the rim of the impressive rock wall of Craig Cau to Penygadair.

The third one - PEN Y FAN.

South Wales – Pen y Fan (886 metres/2907 feet)

Situated in the Brecon Beacons National Park Pen y Fan is the highest peak in the southern UK.
Known for it’s unpredictable weather, its’ harsh terrain has been used to great effect by UK Special Forces to test the mental and physical strength of prospective members.

The recommended route is a direct one from The Storey Arms, via Corn Du.

Three Peaks Wales Video 1

I thought I'd post some videos of others who have done the challenge (for a bit of inspiration!) during the run up to the bid day.

This first one is great!

The scenery is amazing, even if it does get a little 'damp'!

Second Practice

So, a long time has passed and no updates. This is because there has been things going on in the group's lives which has meant that the momentum dipped slightly.

To counter this, we arranged another trek up Pen-Y-Fan. This time after work and with some of the group that haven't gone up before.  This provided an excellent opportunity again for people to test their own fitness levels and determination.

It was a great success! The evening (15/7) was beautiful which was remarkable as the weather has been awful. There was some real determination and soul searching that went on that evening but everyone made it to the peak and we all came out of it more determined than ever to press on and complete the challenge. There are some pictures below, again courtesy of Stuart Evans.

OOOPS!

Hello all,

Due to a technical problem, I've had to re-create the blog and port over all the posts to this one! All the previous posts display the same date as they were just entered.

Lots to post as we havent got long so please be patient.

Thanks

Admin.

Training Walk Done

Well, the training went ahead yesterday morning. We all met in the Car Park of Pen Y Fan at 10am (ish!) and set off! There are photos that myself and Stuart took which I will put onto the blog.

The scenery is absolutely breathtaking! I advise anyone to at least attempt it one in their life. We all have various levels of fitness and not one of us really struggled. It showed us three important things:

1. Whether we'll actually enjoy doing the challenge.
2. Assess our own personal fitness levels so we can work on it.
3. Equipment. What we did and didn't need.

I think I can safely say that we all enjoyed it immensely! We are all a bit sunburned as the weather was fantastic but from a personal point of view, I loved it and cannot wait to do the challenge!!

Trial Run

To get into the spirit of things, we are going to hike up Pen Y fan. There will be pictures to follow after we complete the event.

Hello and welcome to the blog for the Cardiff Legal Aid Team. Here we will be updating the blog with our progress on our challenge.......completing the Three Peaks Challenge Wales!!

We will be updating the page as much as we can and adding a Just giving Page so you can donate money. We are raising money for Tenovus. Links to appear shortly.
